PREMIER HOUSE on Tinakori Rd was occupied for training School Dental Nurses from 1937 until 1976.
Originally built in 1843 by Jewish Businessman and Politician Nathaniel Levin (NZ's first Jewish Politician). When the Captial was moved from Auckland to Wellington in 1865 the Crown purchased sections 630 and 631 from Richard Collins for £2900 as a residence for the Premier, the site being close to the new Government Buildings. (Collins had added substantially to the small timber cottage built by Nathaniel Levin in 1843). Premier House provides a rare insight into the public and private lives of NZ's political leaders.
Premier house was extended to accomodated Jewish PM Sir Julius Vogel and his wife Mary Clayton whose father (Colonial Architect W H Clayton) built the extensive alterations to Premier House changing it into a late Victorian Italianate style timber home with 8 bedrooms, enlarged servants quarters a conservatory and a ballroom, decorated with chicago and bay windows and completed in 1873 for £2885. In 1884 NZ's first lift was installed to transport the gout ridden Sir Julius Vogel. During the Vogels residence the house was known for its oppulent parties and aquired the name "The Casino".
